Yes, if you are not physically able to take the stairs, or taking the stairs causes pain, you can count the minutes you are active. Being active for 1 minute is the equivalent of 1 flight.
The objective is to increase movement throughout the day. So we encourage you to select a time when you are sedentary for 20 min or more and add a 5 min movement segment. Integrate movement while at work, watching TV, or reading a book. You can find movement ideas while at your workstation here.
The rule that 1 active minute = 1 flight is only for those unable to take the stairs.
Climb IU is a stair-climbing challenge meant to encourage people to increase movement throughout the day and save energy in their everyday environment. So, for example, 1 minute of an aerobics class or stairmaster will not count as a flight.
If your teammates would like to share how they're doing and cheer each other on, we recommend using one of the templates below. NOTE: These are optional and should be used in addition to each team member's online tracker. Healthy IU will not see the flights tracked on the templates below.
Use electronically on a shared drive:
Excel file (automatically calculates Weekly and Grand Totals)
Print and post in a common area:
PDF (designed to fit best on legal-size paper, 8.5x14")
Yes, however it's much easier to tabulate weekly results if you use the online tracker! We recommend you try it for a few days, and if you don't like it, you can track your flights with the paper tracker (see printable PDF below). To have your flights count toward the challenge and included in the Weekly Results summary e-mail, you must e-mail your weekly flight total (with your name and campus) to climbiu@indiana.edu by 8:00 a.m. on Mondays. (You do not need to scan & e-mail the PDF, you can simply e-mail your Weekly Total.)
Team representative's role:
- Be the point person if we have any questions or media inquiries about your team
Please count flights of stairs at any location!
Yes. Please let us know at climbiu@indiana.edu so that we can accurately count your team's flights for the weekly results.
Climb IU is targeted for IU employees, and while students will not be eligible to receive incentives from the challenge, they are still encouraged to take the stairs! Make it a goal to take the stairs as an individual or team. You can download the trackers for your own personal use below.
